Intermountain Healthcare Data Analyst-Technical-Staff in Murray, Utah

Job Description:

This position focuses the majority of their time producing analytical solutions (reports, dashboards, tools, etc.) for leadership and stakeholders across the organization that supports business or clinical initiatives. This position provides consultation and support in the development, analysis, interpretation, and management of a variety of routine to moderately complex data sources to support process improvement, operations, strategy, cost reduction and increased patient safety and satisfaction.


Job Essentials

This position is responsible for providing analytical support - typically at a system-wide level. May work as part of a system-wide team or interact with stakeholders across the system. Typically this position performs analysis on routine or moderately complex projects under general supervision. This position works with data sources serving the needs of customers in one or more business areas:

Institute for Healthcare Delivery Research / Clinical Programs: Provides consultative assistance to physicians and administrators from internal and external health care systems who are attending training in health care quality improvement. Acts as content expert for data related to the clinical area assigned. Supports clinical development teams in reporting, research, data exploration, and care process development and tracking.

Population Health Management / Decision Support: Population health management analytics (PHMA) supports the development, implementation, and measurement of systems of care that assess the health needs of a target population and proactively provides and coordinates services to improve the health of that population. PHMA provides support for the following functions: integration of population health data, value improvement, standard quality service and cost metrics and measurement, risk scoring and severity adjustment, attribution methods, contract analysis, and new data source insight. PHMA utilizes data from across the healthcare system and across the continuum, including hospital, physician, and claims data.

Supply Chain: Provides expertise in analytics in the following areas - Total Cost of Ownership, forecasting, benchmarking, basic statistics, supplier financial health assessment and trend analysis. Analysts develop business cases, track make goods, develop reports and dashboards for KPI's and other data requirements, and develop self-service tools for data needs. The Supply Chain Analytics group is responsible for providing data to their stakeholders, developing savings methodologies (collaborating with finance), validating all savings projects led by supply chain teams, and allocating the savings to the various facilities. The Supply Chain Analyst acts as the liaison between the business unit and Information Technology's Business Application Analyst team.

SelectHealth: Performs analytical activities to support decision making, planning, research, and administration for SelectHealth insurance products and initiatives. Works with diverse datasets including claims, enrollment, premium, provider, care management, benefit configuration, quality, regulatory, and other related datasets.

Human Resources: Provides expertise in analysis, forecasting, planning, and research for human capital strategy and operations including: recruiting, performance management, education, succession planning, benefits, compensation, payroll, labor market analysis, workforce planning, workforce forecasting, staffing optimization, staff productivity and other areas of Human Resource management. Works with data from core HRMS systems, talent management systems, scheduling and timekeeping systems, survey data, data from external sources, and data from other functional areas throughout Intermountain Healthcare.

Research: Provides study design and statistical analysis for researchers (doctors, nurses, therapists, etc.) across any and all specialties in intermountain healthcare. Provides sample size / power calculations, study designs, randomization, and statistical analysis ranging from simple t tests to complex mixed effects models or Bayesian predictive analyses. Works with databases (simple SQL), imports data into statistical software, prepares the data for analysis and does the analysis, presenting the results including tables and graphs so that the researcher can understand, use, and present the results to others.

Continuous Improvement: Provides expertise in data modeling, study design, and analysis to support strategic Continuous Improvement initiatives with competency to summarize the research into statistical process control charts, annotated run charts, pareto charts, and other statistical diagrams. Performs operational process improvement diagnostics through process flow diagramming, tally sheet planning, Lean tools, and other financial impact analysis. Develops comprehensive understanding of patient throughput and process failures, and data flows such as patient charges. Provides external clinical outcomes reporting to subscribed disease registries and other healthcare regulatory bodies. Utilizes EDW to work with data from core EMR and ancillary medical record systems along with ERP and related financial systems.

RCO: Provides operational and technical support to Revenue Cycle (RCO) and PAS Management in the analysis and reporting of various Revenue Cycle data. This support includes the design, development and maintenance of processes for providing key measures relevant to revenue cycle operations, including patient revenue, billing, cash collections, denials, bad debt, charity, administrative adjustments, as well as other initiatives and projects as needed.

Medical Group: Provides expertise in analysis, forecasting, basic statistical and graphical analysis, flow diagramming, planning, and research for Intermountain Medical Group(IMG) in areas of practice management and quality initiatives including: Accounts receivable (A/R), value recognition program (VRP) reporting, patient experience, meaningful use, various CMS and government initiatives, HEDIS, NCQA and NQF (National Quality Forum) clinical quality data analysis and performance monitoring and technical consultation for quality improvement initiatives around these measures ,panel management, third next available, telephones, wait time, new facility planning, advanced directives, ERP, operations process improvement, Lean, and financial analysis on occasion. Utilizes EDW, and less often external data sources, to work with data from: core EMR systems, IMG master data management stores including facility master and provider master, imaging and lab services, DIG, and CDR. Key linkages are ODs, AODs, Medical directors, practice managers, physician recruiting, Select Health, Shared Accountability, credentialing, provider enrollment, Finance, Human Resources, Accounting, Strategic Planning and Research, HDD, CMS, Legal, ATP, and Compliance.

Planning: Serves as analytic resource to system planners and divisional operating executives to maximize the use of Intermountain strategic planning data resources. Planning analysts conduct both internal system and healthcare market analysis by developing and deploying planning reports and dashboards, informational maps, tools and analyses for subject areas including hospital and clinic volume tracking and forecasting, population growth, demographic trends, population use-rates, payer mix, patient severity indexing, cost and efficiency studies, capital asset utilization, clinical service distribution and activity, and community physician need.

Physician Contracting: Analysts develop business cases; develop, validate, and support reports and dashboards for KPI's and other data requirements; and develop self-service tools for data needs. The Analyst is responsible for providing data to stakeholders. Physician Contracting stakeholders include but are not limited to, senior executives, hospital and Medical Group operational leadership, operators with contract portfolios, legal counsel, compliance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and the Physician Contracting department. The Analyst acts as the liaison between Physician Contracting and the Business Application Analyst team.

Core Essentials:

  1. Creates reports that answer multiple related questions as well as reports with linked content, drilldown and nested parameters. The report is formatted in such a way that leads the user through the report in a well-organized, easy to understand fashion.

  2. Writes ad hoc SQL, including basic selects, joins, use of Where clause and simple functions (e.g., Trunc, Sum, Min, Max, Avg, Concat, etc.).

  3. Understanding of Primary / Foreign Keys, Table / Field Aliases, and Partitions / Indexes.

  4. Assists in the identification of data quality (accuracy, completeness, etc.) issues. Assists with the process of database design for assigned projects. As appropriate, trains other individuals and teams in the routine use of data collection, analysis, and reporting and interpretation tools for measuring performance.

Additional Essentials:

  1. Collaborates with corporate and region resources to design, create, test, and implement analytic tools (databases, reports, web applications, dashboards, etc.) that support enterprise / region needs and to improve data collection and reporting strategies (minimize duplication, redundancy, etc.).

  2. Demonstrates intermediate level SQL and data extraction skills (i.e., Uses pre-defined scripts, changes parameters, GUI query (e.g., MS Access, tools with drag-drop query creation capability, and Excel cubes).

  3. Uses standard Intermountain Reporting tools to generate reports for end users that interpret data for others to promote evidence-based decision making.

  4. Accesses and runs existing reports and retrieve information. Possesses a fundamental understanding of the domain's data and associated data models and uses it to produce high quality material.

  5. Compares data output to ensure data accuracy. Creates basic QA test plans and validates data for accuracy.

  6. Responsible to document work / projects per enterprise-wide standards (reports, project tracking, databases, etc.).

  7. Understands the appropriate use of indexes, partitions, ability to understand ERDs

  8. Uses / analyzes Intermountain data sources (EDW, ORMIS, AS400, Essbase, Risk Management, etc.) to meet local and enterprise needs.

  9. Provides consultation, data analysis and project management for clinical and business stakeholders across the organization. Communicates technical / analytical concepts to others.

  10. Shares important and relevant information with the team. Proactively offers suggestions, provides resources, volunteers for assignments, and removes barriers to help the team accomplish its goals.

  11. Participates in Intermountain?s analyst community by attending and taking part in monthly analyst community events such as ASK (Analysts Seeking Knowledge).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with two years of analytics experience. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

Demonstrated proficiency and a working knowledge of SQL (structured query language), quality improvement principles, and a fundamental knowledge of database design principles.

Demonstrated experience in the developing, analyzing, interpreting, and managing of a variety of moderately complex data sets.

Demonstrated capabilities in planning, participating, and managing moderately complex analytics projects.

Demonstrated experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet and e-mail, and scheduling applications.

Demonstrated experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in an analytics related field such as statistics, mathematics, information systems, computer science, finance, business management, or economics.

If degree is not in an analytics related field, four years of analytics experience demonstrating proficiency performing the job essentials at this job level.
